Why You Can’t “See” God
A quiet reflection on why the source of life feels invisible — even when it is always present.
FEATURED REFLECTIONS
A Common Question
People often ask:
“If God exists,
why can’t we see God?”
The Usual Assumption
We rarely notice the assumption behind the question:
If something is real,
it should be visible.
It should appear
like any other object.
A Small Shift in Perspective
But what if this assumption itself
is the problem?
What if the source of everything
is not another object to be seen?
Think About Something Simple
Now consider a torch.
When it is switched on,
light fills the room.
You see the beam.
You see objects.
You see everything clearly.
But Look Closer
Do you see the battery?
No.
Not because it is absent —
but because it is doing its job.
What This Points To
The battery is not something
you look at while using the torch.
It is what makes seeing possible
in the first place.
The Deeper Insight
Vedanta uses this to highlight
a very subtle confusion:
We try to understand
the source of life
the same way we understand objects —
by looking at them.
But the Source Is Different
The source of experience
cannot be experienced like an object.
Because it is not something
within experience.
It is what makes
all experience possible.
Right Now, In Your Experience
Life is already “on.”
Thoughts appear.
The body functions.
The world is experienced.
What You Notice… and What You Don’t
You notice everything.
But you don’t notice
what makes noticing possible.
Look Carefully
You notice thoughts
because you are aware.
You notice the world
because you are aware.
You even notice confusion
because you are aware.
What About Awareness Itself?
Awareness does not come and go.
It does not become brighter or duller.
It does not improve or degrade.
Only the instruments change —
the body, the mind, the senses.
Why It Feels “Invisible”
So it feels like the source is missing.
But it is not missing.
It feels invisible
because it is not an object to see.
Always Present, Easily Overlooked
Just like the battery
is unnoticed when the torch works,
consciousness is unnoticed
when life is functioning.
The Final Point
Vedanta does not say
the truth is hidden somewhere else.
It says something much simpler:
It is overlooked
because it is always present.
Reflection
If it is always here,
not something to find,
not something to see—
then what exactly
are you looking for?
